When and where was this photograph taken?

Paris, 2013. Our first collective trip.

What was your inspiration?

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.”
– Albert Einstein

I adore this quote, it implies the power of mystery in photography. The unknown; the catalyst of introspection. One of my goals in Paris was to capture shots that promote such mystery.

What was your thought process?

Juxtaposition in terms of highlights and shadows – combining a definite silhouette with illuminated subjects. The  composition was set, and the test of patience followed. Luck found me with the foreground subject, his outfit added additional contrast against the fully lit office workers in the background. He’s looks out of place and time. As soon as the shutter was depressed, without reviewing, I knew it was the one.
