After 6 years of street photography in European cities (Paris 2013, Istanbul 2014, Berlin 2015, Barcelona 2016, Rome 2017, Budapest 2018) The 8 Street were in need of a completely new challenge. The familiarity had tired us out, an injection of enthusiasm was needed, and so during our last trip in Budapest, and with a large helping of red wine, we brainstormed where to go next.

There’s no two ways about it: street photography is HARD.WORK.
Many, many, many hours are spent walking around, looking for quirky, mysterious, humorous, unusual and unique moments that are unlike anything that has come before - or close to it.

The month of May saw us participate in our fifth annual 8Street trip. Five years has passed so quickly – our collective has grown as a group (both by numbers and the quality of our imagery), and street photography has continued to be a huge source of inspiration and the perfect opportunity for us to channel our collective sense of adventure.

Street photography is not always done alone. Back in the Sixties Diane Arbus, Gary Winnogrand, and William Klein used to bump into each other taking photographs on the streets of New York. Here at The 8Street we have made it less about bumping into each other on the streets of New York and more about organizing ourselves into a tight group of friends, booking regular trips abroad, hanging out, drinking cheap beer and good wine and occasionally taking photos.

Observing, reacting and preempting are three words that come to mind when comparing the similarities between wedding photography and street photography. A technique used in one genre can be implemented in the other. . this is what inspires me to go out and shoot when wedding season winds down each year.

What was the impetus behind organising Paris?
At the start of 2013 I went on an incredibly inspiring 18-day photography trip to Bangladesh with Maciej Dakowisz. We would shoot all day, returning in the evening to edit our own work, before having the other person critique it.

Les Jambes de Paris
There are many ways to shoot street photography. Some people prefer to wait for something to happen once they have identified a backdrop or light, some prefer to keep walking and see what appears in front of them.
